"The Cathedral Chapter of Canons is a college of priests responsible for carrying out the most solemn liturgical duties in the Cathedral Church. It is also the Cathedral Chapter's duty to fulfil the offices entrusted to it by the law or the Diocesan Bishop" (Code of Canon Law, no. 503)

Specifically, the purposes of this entity include:

  • Celebrating liturgical functions in the Holy Cathedral Church
  • Ensuring the pastoral care of the faithful who come to it, with a special focus on tourism
  • Performing any duties entrusted to it by common law or by the Bishop of the Diocese
  • Being a consultative body in matters proposed to it by the Bishop
  • Preserving and managing all the assets of the Mosque-Cathedral and the Chapter

To achieve these objectives the daily work of the Chapter is organised through a series of working committees. Their mission is none other than to specifically and effectively address each and every one of the issues relating to the proper functioning of the institution:

  • Liturgy committee
  • Pastoral committee
  • Committee for relations with brotherhoods and fraternities
  • Committee for inter-religious dialogue
  • Heritage committee
  • Committee for extraordinary works
  • Committee for the inventory of the Mosque-Cathedral's personal property
  • Committee for the ownership of the Mosque-Cathedral
  • Finance committee
  • Tourism committee
  • Committee for tour guides
  • Committee for the monitoring of "The Soul of Cordoba" night visits and visits to the Mosque-Cathedral Tower
  • Security committee
  • Protocol committee
  • Media relations committee

Similarly, another of the essential tools of value to the Chapter in the best possible of its powers are chapter meetings. In these meetings, generally held twice a month, issues are discussed and decisions are taken on the matters of interest to the institution.

Chapterhouse

The Chapterhouse, whilst not being open to visits, plays a very important role in the daily running of the Cathedral as this is where the Chapter meets. It was originally conceived as the crypt of the chapel of Cardinal Salazar, located in the basement. It is an octagonal space with a recessed dome and decorated in plasterwork. Some interesting works of art are housed within it, including the sculpture of Agnus Dei, by Pedro de Mena, and a series of five oil paintings attributed to Juan Pompeyo

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fuensanta

This has been declared a Place of Cultural Interest (Decree 8/2007, of 9 January). Its foundation commemorates the miraculous event that took place around the year 1420 when the Virgin appeared to Gonzalo García. Decades later the shrine was built to protect the fountain, the popular "Pocito” (little well), where the discovery of the Marian image took place. The Sanctuary was built next to this. Both buildings are constructed on the grounds of the old garden of Albacete, property of the Cathedral Chapter. The name of the church, Our Lady of Fuensanta, is reflected in an anonymous work in polychrome clay that has been linked to the circle of the sculptor Mercadante of Brittany. Since her coronation in 1994 she has been patron of the city of Cordoba, along with the holy martyrs Acisclo and Victoria.

The church is divided into three naves, separated by buttresses that support the arches. One of its highlights is its interesting collection of Cordoban Baroque paintings, as in this Sanctuary the Valderrama legacy is preserved, composed of four canvases by Antonio del Castillo which have recently been restored by the Cathedral Chapter, as well as other works such as The burial of Christ by the painter Juan de Alfaro.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Linares

Its history goes back to the time when Cordoba was conquered by King Ferdinand III "the Saint" in the year 1236. Tradition has it that the monarch built a chapel in honour of the Virgin, taking advantage of an ancient watchtower. Other subsequent buildings were added to this medieval structure, in the area of the chevet, spanning from the 16th to the 19th century. This is a church with a single nave with transept, a tower in the chevet and a bell gable at the bottom. The devotion here revolves around the namesake of the church, Our Lady of Linares, an image of Mannerist appearance in which the medieval imprint noted by some scholars barely remains. Included among the heritage preserved in the Sanctuary are some paintings linked to Juan Luis Zambrano, Juan de Alfaro and José de Sarabia. It has also been declared a Place of Cultural Interest, in accordance with Decree 270/2001, of 11 December.

Chapel of Our Lady of Good Health

This forms part of the Cemetery of Our Lady of Good Health, a funerary complex built in the early 19th century and where the tombs of some of the most illustrious figures from the city of Cordoba are to be found. The current chapel is constructed on the site of an earlier small chapel, built as a result of the discovery of the sculpture of Our Lady of Good Health, a small piece made from polychrome terracotta which is around fifteen centimetres high. The design of this chapel is the work of the architect Ignacio Tomás, who created a nave of two sections, covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and a domed transept. Whilst the altar is filled with an altarpiece containing paintings of the martyrs Acisclo and Victoria, the exterior is finished with a Neoclassical influenced façade and topped off with a triangular gable. A representation of the Virgin of Good Health, in stone, can be seen there.
